We’re so excited to welcome our new History teacher, Kyle Kohl!

Mr. Kohl is joining us after graduating from Ferris State University last year with a bachelor’s in social studies and physical education. He currently teaches U.S. History, World History, and American Government here at Lutheran Westland. Mr. Kohl currently lives in Willis, Michigan where he grew up and comes from a family of educators and coaches. In addition to teaching, Mr. Kohl is a former college baseball player who is excited about the possibility of coaching here at Lutheran Westland in the near future. Mr. Kohl’s hobbies include watching baseball, playing golf, and spending time up north with his family.

  1. What’s your title at Lutheran Westland?

    Social Studies teacher

  2. Where are you from?

    I grew up and still live in Willis Michigan. I went to college at Ferris State University in Big Rapids for three years. I also have a family cottage up north in Indian River that I spend as much time at as I can.

  3. When did you know that you wanted to be in the Lutheran high school environment and what led you to pursue that path?

    After graduating college, I was unsure as to where I wanted to pursue a teaching career, but as soon as I was introduced to Lutheran Westland, I knew this was the place for me. It was clear from the very beginning that everyone at Lutheran Westland shared my passion for providing the best education possible.

  4. What’s your favorite Bible verse?

    Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

    Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  5. What are three words to best describe you?

    Determined, funny, and caring

  6. What was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

    I worked at a movie theater for a little while. It was a really fun place to work, especially since it allowed me to see movies for free while I was working there.

  7. Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

    I would say that I am pretty good at voice impressions.

  8. If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

    Being able to fly would be amazing.

  9. What’s your favorite food?

    Mac & Cheese.

  10. What’s your least favorite food?

    Hamburger helper.

  11. What’s your favorite place that you’ve traveled and why?

    My favorite place that I have ever traveled to would have to be Don Pedro Island in Florida. It is a private island that you have to take a ferry to with very few people living on the island. The house we stayed at was on a private beach so me and my family basically had a whole beach to ourselves.

  12. Where would you like to travel next and why?

    Going to Japan is the next big adventure that I am excited for. I have always wanted to go and experience Japanese culture and see all the unique sites.

  13. What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

    I am a huge movie fan. I love watching all types of movies and genres.

  14. What’s one hobby you’d like to get into?

    I would love to get into playing the piano at some point in my life. I bought a keyboard last year, but I haven’t used it as much as I would like to.

  15. What’s your favorite sport to watch and which team do you root for?

    I love watching all sports but if I had to pick, I would choose baseball. Go Tigers!

  16. Are you an early bird or a night owl?

    Growing up and in college I was always a night owl, but nowadays I am an early bird.

  17. Are you a dog person or a cat person (neither or both)?

    I am 100% a dog person. I have two Boston terriers, one named Millie and the other Lola.

  18. What’s one of your favorite memories from the past year?

    Spending time with my friends and family up north at Indian River.

  19. What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

    Growing up my parents would always tell me that everything that happens good or bad has a purpose. Everything happens for reason because God has a plan for everyone.

  20. Is there any advice you’d offer to current and future Lutheran Westland students?

    To all current and future warriors, I would say take the time to search for your passion and then go for it. Everyone at Lutheran Westland wants to see each one of you meet and even surpass the goals you set for yourself. Once a Warrior, always a Warrior!
