Lutheran High school Association of Greater Detroit

Under the guidance of God, the Lutheran High School movement in the metropolitan Detroit area has grown from small beginnings to a large and expanding force in Christian education. Since its initial organization in 1944, what is now the Lutheran High School Association of Greater Detroit (consisting of some seventy Lutheran congregations) has grown into a system of three high schools with a combined average student enrollment of 1,000 students.

Lutheran Westland’s Blessed Beginnings

In January of 1986, the Board of Directors of the Lutheran High School Associate of Greater Detroit became aware of a building for sale. This building was a vacant school in Westland, Michigan, and was offered for sale by the Wayne-Westland Public School District. Our superintendent, Dr. Herbert Moldenhauer, investigated and was much impressed by what he saw. The building was an excellent facility, containing seventeen spacious classrooms, a full gymnasium, large media center, and exceptional band and music rooms. The extensive grounds were beautifully landscaped and included an all-weather track, football field, ball diamond, and other large playing fields bordering on scenic Hines Park.

Dr. Moldenhauer and our Assistant Superintendent, Rev. John Herzog, conveyed their enthusiasm to the Board of Control. It seemed clear that our Lord was sending the High School Association a fine way to expand Christ-centered secondary education to the western suburbs of Detroit. A prayerful consideration to purchase was undertaken, as were consultations with area pastors and congregations. Convinced that this opportunity was the Lord's doing, the Board of Control bid on the property. In only four weeks, the final papers were signed. The months that followed were speedy and exciting ones. Faculty were recruited from sister Lutheran schools, repairs and renovations were done to the building, a beginning curriculum was established, and an eager student body was enrolled. Finally, on August 27, 1986, Lutheran High School Westland began its fist academic year. Mr. Ross E. Stueber served as principal. Its year-long theme, suggested by the happy events of the preceding months, was "Blessed Beginnings." Indeed, the school year was full of them, and our lives have continued to be full of blessings from our Lord Jesus Christ, for whom we live and to whom our school is dedicated.
